I just finished a Bachelors degree in political science (went to a top 75 University) got a job at Johns Hopkins Hospital- best in the world- doing patient billing and scheduling. They are giving me 7 days of paid training in everything to do with hospital operations...Billing, insurance ect Is this good considering I can get my foot in the door and get grad school paid for (by Hopkins I want an MPH or an MBA), or am I GROSSLY underemployed because I have a 4 year degree? When you apply to college, do you have to indicate your major? (I'd like mine to be Bio.) If I say I want Bio, I don't want it to be used against me. (Because of my 90 grade, and other science grade. Do I have any (and what are my) chances of getting into Harvard, UPenn Wharton, Johns Hopkins, Brown, NYU, MIT, Duke Yale, Stanford, CalTech, Babson College or Columbia Univ.? I know these are some of the nation's most competitive colleges, but I just want some advice and some knowledge on the position I hold as a "standout" applicant, or a Harvard applicant. Harvard has been my dream college for many years and I want to do as much as possible to increase my chances of admission into it. Also, I am not rich due to my parents being unemployed. So how will that affect me (positively or negatively)? I am currently a High School Junior (about to be a senior in Fall 2009). I am a Indian (Asian male born in US) attending HS in NYC. I know it's kind of late to ask this question now, but I want to pretty much see where I stand now as an applicant. My overall transcript GPA is a 94.50%. I have maintained all A's with the exception of 3 high B's ( AP US History which I am going up in for 2nd term, physical education and art) on my transcript. I just took my SAT's today and think I did pretty good in math (about 750), and I will have to improve my Critical Reading and writing score (a little bit). I took the Math 1 SAT II's and got a 660, and I will be taking 3-6 more in Fall 2009. My interested majors, in preferred order, are Neuroscience, Business/ Entrepreneurship, and Philosophy. I will go with any of these and would definitely love double majors if available. I continued studying at my JHS until 9th grade, and then I graduated from my JHS being the Salutatorian. My strong subjects are math and science, and have done very well on any standardized tests involving them. I have been a part of my school's yearbook committee, and have volunteered for above 100 hours in my school library and for above 700 hours at my local church/ temple. I have also received about 100+ hours from being a part of the ARISTA National Honor Society. I have done hospital rotations with the hospital associated with my school. I was part of a 10 week (once a week) gap year Medical Internship (called HPREP) at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, NY. I have taken a lot of college credit courses at CUNY Queens College and CUNY York College in Psychology, Sociology, Health (4 semester course), and Math Intro. to Probability and Statistics. I am also planning to take philosophy, writing, and maybe drama during the upcoming semesters. I have passed all of the classes I took with A's or B's. I have started working on my essays, and received some of my letters of recommendation (the recommendations are AMAZING!!) I have served in the Student Government of my school as Junior Grade Representative, and there's a 99% chance I'll be the Senior Grade Representative as well. For this Summer, I have applied for quite a few internships and will be doing math and/ or science [research] internships over the summer. My school doesn't offer many AP courses and doesn't offer any honors classes, but I am challenging myself with the toughest classes. This year I took AP US History, as that was the only one I could take. I will be taking AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP English next year. I am not sure but I might being doing the Queens Bride to Medicine program, in which I will take college level classes in Calculus, English, and Chemistry without any college credit. I'm 24 years old and I've been in the real estate industry since 2003. I'm not fulfilled so I made a decision to make a career change and I've been accepted into the school of my choice, but everyone is saying that it's so competitive that it scares me about job opportunities when I'm done. It's due to the competition that others are trying to steer me away and I've also heard that some hospitals/departments are only hiring experienced nurses. I thought this was a good thing, since my program is accelerated (this is my 2nd bachelor's degree). I chose this field, because I always want to be needed. Also, what makes me confused is that I always read articles that claim that there is a shortage of nurses? I know that I would just be placed where I don't want to be, just to gain some experience. Like if I desired to work in Labor and delivery, I know I probably would not get what I wanted right away and that I would have to wait for an opportunity to open up like everyone else does. I work for a national developer/home builder full time, but I also have a second employer. My second employer is one of the greatest hospitals in the world, Johns Hopkins Hospital and I think its a resource in my case. They have tuition reimbursement. Also, doctor's and nurse's have already asked me if I needed any letters of recommendations. I don't as of yet, but it's nice to know that I have their support. My son is now 5 months old. He's had pyloric stenosis twice....I know....weird. But, now we are in round three of his recurring problems. He has his first surgery at 25 days old and then next at 87 days old. He was born 7.14 lbs, went up to 8.6 and dropped down to 6.2 lbs in two days. He was placed on a different formula and started on antacids. He was admitted to Shady Grove Adventist for dehydration, weight loss and possibly pyloric stenosis. They did the studies, and they came inconclusive so they did an exploratory surgery laparocscopic, and showed positive for pyloric stenosis. They operated and he showed excellent improvement. He went from 6 lbs to 9.11 lbs in two weeks....and it all started again. Shady Grove refused an upper GI scan b/c the ultra sound came back negative. So I took him to Johns Hopkins University Hospital...he got everyone's attention b/c of his obvious symptoms and projectile vomiting and the fact of a second stenosis. They operated again and did various biopsies, biopsies show only a slight sensitivity to lactose. But nothing else was found in surgery. It was discouraging and heart breaking b/c they have no idea what's wrong with him. They switched him to Neocate formula (freakishly expensive I might add!), and placed on Prevacid. We go home and Will went from 8.7 lbs to 14.2 lbs in 8 weeks. GREAT! But...he's lost a pound and a half in 4 days....They upped his Prevacid and performed another upper GI scan. He's been on 9 different formula's and 6 different antacids. He's a wonderful baby who doesn't cry and is always happy. The doctors are very confused as this is very uncommon to happen. We are trying to stay strong but it's harder and harder every day to see him shrink away...We have a very supportive family and it hurts us all to watch him go through this. I did not get upset or cry the whole time until they looked down at the floor fighting tears in their eyes and told me "There was 100 yrs of experience in his operating room and we couldn't find anything." He has excellent doctors, they have been more than helpful....but I need some help here... Does anyone have any experience with this situation or shed any light on it?? I really want to go to Johns Hopkins University (it's only 3 hours away from home; plus I live instate), major in some type of Biology. Then if I get accepted go to their med school. I know I'm just a second semester freshman, but hey, there are some high school questions asking the same thing. I'm a freshman at Johns Hopkins University pursuing a double degree in Molecular & Cellular Biology and Writing Seminars. Right now, my first semester gpa (uncovered) is 3.7 and after this semester, I can realistically hope that it will rise to 3.8. I'm doing research with an anatomy professor at the Hopkins medical school and hope to continue for at least this summer, if not for another year. I'm also a staff writer for the school newspaper and I raise money for Relay for Life: American Cancer Society. I'm also the secretary of the school's Vietnamese Students Association. I work for a company that organizes NIH conferences and spend most of my time reading and deciphering abstracts. If my gpa stays at 3.8, I do research with the anatomy professor at the medical school for about a year and a half and manage to publish, volunteer at a hospital for a summer or two, shadow a professor for some period of time, remain a staff writer on the newspaper, organize a charity event for VSA, study abroad, get recommendations from the anatomy professor, a writing professor, the advising committee, and another professor from the medical school, graduate Dean's List in both biology and writing, and continue working with this NIH company as well as score pretty well on the MCAT (I only looked through the verbal reasoning section but it was ridiculously easy)-- What are my chances? I am currently a junior in high school making a list of colleges I'd like to go to. I live in NY but I am also open to schools out of state for nursing. I'd prefer not to go to a community college. I have a really high GPA, I volunteer at a local hospital and I will have taken about 6 or 7 Ap classes by my senior year. after my junior year I will have taken 5. My SAT score was a 1780/2400 but I am retaking it because that was my first time. I'm taking the ACT in april and plan on getting a 30+. SO far the schools I have come up with are UPENN, john hopkins, UCLA, UF, UNC CHapel HIll, penn state, university of illinois-chicago, university of rochester and University of texas-austin.
