Media Specialist Career Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: What should I major in?

I am interested in too many things. I am training in the Army Reserves until July. I am going back to college but I don't know what to major in. There are a couple of careers I could see myself doing. Those being English/History/Gym/Music teacher, youth pastor, police officer, athletic trainer, information technology specialist, or media design. I was thinking about majoring in Education, Christian Ministry, Athletic Training, Business with IT emphasis, or New Media. I seem to want to do a lot of things and have been having trouble narrowing everything down to just one thing. I have taken most of my gen eds and really need to start working on my major classes.  more

Voting Question: I just want to go back to school... What should I do?? Any teachers or principals would be extremely Helpful!!?

Okay, I have a serious issue at my school… I’m a senior on the last semester of my high school career, and I have pretty much upheld good grades and almost a perfect “A” average. Well, on Monday I was called up to the office and told that I was suspended out-of-school for ten days, and I would be given a tribunal within those ten days to try and prove my innocence. Well, there are two rules in the category of the rule book I may have broken. One is "Computer Trespass" and the other is "Computer Misuse" and I was filed under the first one, "Computer Trespass". Computer misuse yields a punishment that is far less severe and does not include expulsion. I strongly believe what I did was Misuse, however I do understand what I did was wrong, and could very well be "Computer Trespass". I'll explain exactly what I did, and what I used it for. I used the portable version of "Firefox", a free web browser, and went through a proxy into a server to bypass the firewall and get to "Facebook" (Yes, I know that now in retrospect it was remarkably stupid). They called me into the office and had some pictures as evidence of my school account going onto "Facebook.com" and they explained my punishment. I have two problems with this, one being that I might have been punished for the wrong rule (Thinking maybe I broke misuse as opposed to trespassing), and two being that I received a much harder punishment than others with the same issue. I will also explain that I hosted the "Firefox" with the proxy already set up on my web server available for anyone to download. Some of the other kids in the school began to catch wind of this, and began downloading the program. I use the program for other things outside of school as well, so I did not notice, and even if I had, what they choose to download is there issue. I am legally allowed to own and run this proxy and host this program, and I have checked with my hoster, as well as Mozilla, the creator of "Firefox". The other students who were caught with the same program were given one day of inn-school suspension and nothing else. I was given a report that stated I distributed the program to other students, which is not true, however even if it were, I cannot be held responsible for what others choose to download onto their school accounts. They found out that I was the owner of the proxy and expelled me when I technically did not commit anything more than the others, seeing as though running a proxy outside of school is 100% legal. So I believe if I am being expelled then that would mean the dozens of other students should be as well. I have already taken the initiative to e-mail my teachers and ask for work while on suspension and I have also e-mailed my principal hoping he could override the assistant principal’s decision. My teachers all have e-mailed me back and told me that they would talk to the principal to inform him that I am indeed a good student. My principal has not e-mailed me back yet, and it has been almost a week. I am running out of ideas of what to do. I was thinking of maybe getting my local news involved because my school is a "school of excellence" and any media disturbances would be devastating to their reputation. I am just really upset by this and I am trying to find a way to be allowed back in to finish my senior year. I would even be willing to help them fix holes in their network in exchange, or really anything. I truly am sorry for what I did; all I want is to finish school. Here is the actual report I got: "School tech. specialist discovered inappropriate programs in student's folder. It was later determined that student was using program to bypass the school filters and all of the safety protocols. Student also shared the program with other individuals. OSS 10 days pending tribunal Feb. 18-March 3." I certainly appreciate honesty; however please don’t take this the wrong way. I DO know I did something wrong, I just don’t believe it was any worse than any of the other kids, and I don’t believe I should receive the same punishment as someone who deals crack. I would just take my punishment, but the punishment is being removed from school, I don’t know how else to show them that I am truly remorseful and I would undoubtedly accept a punishment, all I want is to be able to go back to school. Again, Thank you very much for any help ahead of time!  more

Resolved Question: Was Palin baby announcement a red herring?

A stroke of genius perhaps? When the McCain campaign announced that Bristol Palin was pregnant, the media began a two-day stampede investigating the suggested hypocrisy of Palin's stance on pre-marital sex, followed by commentary on her lack of control of too many kids reflecting her ymanaging skills and a flaw in the "power-frau" image she projects. No one seemed to ask why the campaign released the non-story of a teen pregnancy in the first place? Cuz they were reading the media like a book, perhaps? Supposedly it was to quiet the rumors that Trig wasn't her baby. Yeah, right, sure it was... Well, there were several rumors and stories about Sarah Palin as folks tried to flesh out this unknown candidate for world leader. What choice did we have? McCain dropped her on us out of the "Last Frontier"! We were all his patsy and this maestro was playing us like a fiddle. Rather than ask the right questions, we played along. Then quicker than a McCain VP decision... one non-story... indirectly about Sarah Palin ruled them all- the valid and the not. It roared louder than Hurricane Gustav (I know, I know) and quieted any other discussion of Palin for two days. The stories building up since Friday's announcement ranged from very political to very personal. 1) There was Troopergate--the Alaskan Legislature investigation of Palin's possibly improper dismissal of the Public Safety Commissioner [very political] 2) There was Trig(ger)gate--That baby Trig might be teenie Bristol's uh, like, who cares? [very personal] 3) There was BabyWatergate--That Palin flew to Texas in her 8th month of an already diagnosed high-risk pregnancy to speak at a high-profile Republican conference. Hours before her speech, her water broke! What did Mrs. Right-to-life do? She waited around and delivered her speech as planned. She chose not to get examined by any of the top-ranked neo-natal specialists in the Dallas area but instead called her personal physician who okayed her travel by phone. Palin then, while in inactive labor flew to Anchorage and drove 50 miles to her "personal" physician who delivered baby Trig. The discussion of pro-life Sarah Palin risking her unborn baby and the impact of her strenous 9k round trip travel likely causing Trig's premature birth was getting started by Sunday. [very queasy] But just as the "woman's right to lose" for her career discussion was taking off, Monday's announcement came Campaign provided Juneaugate. The misdirection also kept the next step in the getting to know you phase from getting heard altogether. That was the fact that Sarah Palin called for the troops to be pulled out of Iraq months ago. [very on point] Some ticket. Just imagine, if the media hadn't taken the bait, they could be well on their way to credibly discussing the dissonance on the ticket. Am I giving the McCain campaign too much credit? We've learned from the Bush Presidency that there is perhaps more at play than coincidence here (like the recent drop in gas prices displaying our "healthy" economy)--an invisible hand pulling the strings that we the public never see until the truth gets aired years afterwards. If the announcement was strategic, it was absolutely Rove-ian and I mean it with the highest of praise. Who best knows the media than that puppetmaster? In hindsight it seems too obvious a step, after all the overcoverage of Britney, Lindsey, Miley, Jamie...all one needs to do to stop all serious scrutiny is throw some raw meat [as in a juicy teen story] to the press and watch them devour it like a pack of ...uh journalists. Too easy. Desirable outcome--- Palin looks unfairly attacked and the media loses all credibility. Bristol's pregnancy was never a story and the campaign had no real reason to release it. Well... Here we go again...and, Haven't we learned anything? OMG, thanks for the link Curiosity/Satisfaction. I hope the press gets Palin to explain her secessionism. Palin's involvement with secessionists could be because she wants to be ruler of all. Maybe McCain putting her on the ticket keeps her from taking Alaska out of the Union as well as helps to lower our oil prices!  more

Resolved Question: Can some librarians and school librarians give me some advice on career path into the field?

I'm going to be changing my career from journalist to an English teacher and then school librarian. I was told it was better to work as a teacher first since most school librarian jobs want you to have a teaching certificate and teaching experience. I’m torn I don’t know if I should be a teacher first or just go straight for getting my Masters in library science and then trying to get an endorsement down the line for a library media specialist. I want to have a back up if there aren’t any openings in my area for a school librarian, I want to still be able to get a job and if I am in a public library I can work as a youth librarian. Should I teach for a few years as a English teacher and then try to be a library media specialist/school librarian? In the summers after I become a teacher I planned on working part-time at a library. I have a BS in Journalism and a MS in New Media. I I plan on going to a local university to work on their 1 year certification program for already degreed students in a year in a half and I would start to take all my pre-requisites to be an English teacher in January while working full-time. I know I have to get a masters in library science. There isn't any programs around here in Virginia, so I was going to work as a english teacher for 2 or 3 years and then get an online masters degree from an accredited ALA library school with an endorsement for school and hopefully the school system to help with costs. Does this sound like a good plan? Should I go for a Masters in library science and then work on getting an endorsement later or should I get a teaching certificate and then get an endorsement and masters at the same time. The only problem with that is I would be endorsed for another state and not Virginia. Any advice?  more

Voting Question: What other companies offer the same pay and advancement opportunities as Best Buy for a college student?

Before moving from MD to TN, I had worked at Best Buy for 9 months. While there I made 10/hr, working as a regular media specialist with no special responsibility or power, I was just a regular worker. Three of my five store managers were in their mid-twenties and were recent college grads making extremely decent money. This was my ultimate goal, to spend my college years working my way up to a leadership position at Best Buy so that by the time college graduation rolled around I would have a great job while i was planning the next step in my life, and wouldn't have to choose between minimum wage mall work, or diving head first into the first career that I came across. Unfortunately, after moving to tennessee, and trying to get my job back in a local Best Buy store down here for the last 9 months, I've gotten absolutly nowhere and given up. Is there any other Large retail company where I can receive this kind of great pay, and opportunity to advance in such a short amount of time??!?!  more

Resolved Question: Librarianship Inspiration?

23, BA in journalism, planning to start grad school in the fall to earn my masters degree in library science, with school library media specialist certification. I need to write a statement (250-500 words) describing why I'm interested in the intended program of study and career expectations from the professional degree. I'm interested in the school media aspect; being able to teach students how to properly use the various media available to them to further and aide their education and learning environment. Selfishly, I'm also interested in summers, holidays, weekends and evenings off, getting a pension and having a quite environment to work in. I'm looking for advice from other teacher-librarians or people in the profession to inspire what I'll write in my grad school admission statement. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Do my 7+ years working as a student journalist count for nothing?

In college, I worked for the student newspaper for three years, media relations and marketing for one year and as a freelancer for the yearbook for one year. I also had an internship at a newspaper in Mexico, an internship at a national magazine, and a copy editor position at my J-school's quarterly publication. In additon to this, I have worked as editor in chief and technical writer at a university office while in graduate school for environmental communications (I have worked here for three years in a professional, but part-time capacity). What I want to know is does all of my student experience count for nothing? I have been applying for jobs since December and I still have nothing. A lot of people tell me I have to start my career at the bottom, but I want to work as a communications specialist at a non-profit environmental organization. Opinions from professionals? Thank you...lol...I know my grammar...I am not writing this for a professional publication. This is Yahoo Answers.  more

I've worked in new media for over 12 years from producing CD-ROMs to major websites for private higher education and onto many years working for a TV broadcaster as online specialists on web sites, interactive TV and mobile. My specialism would be media convergence. So I know more than most and would like pass on my skills and broaden my career porfolio by being able to lecture/teach up to University level at somewhere like University of Arts London. I've a first degree in my subject area (2:1) as well as O/A levels. I am currently freelance web consultant would be continuing to work while studying as there's lots of work and don't see myself as penniless student, but could arrange schedule to do 1 or 2 days a week.  more

Resolved Question: History Channel Hit Piece: Dirty Tricks,...?

History Channel Hit Piece: Dirty Tricks,... Malicious Lies & Journalistic Fraud The real story behind Brad Davis, NBC, Popular Mechanics and the History Channel - media whore stooges who engaged in deliberate deception, manipulation and chicanery to please their corporate bosses Alex Jones & Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet Tuesday, August 21, 2007 The History Channel 9/11 special that aired last night was by far the worst hit piece we have ever witnessed, a completely savage, dishonest and deceptive abomination, replete with dirty tricks, malicious lies and a level of journalistic fraud that goes way beyond simple bias. Bradley Davis, the producer of the show, is a paid liar and a hit piece specialist who deceives people by gaining their confidence and then attacking them behind their back. He is famous for the smear job documentary on Michael Jackson and makes a career out of conning people and then stabbing them in the back. His tongue is so smooth, that even the Loose Change crew were prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt on his impartiality before last night's hit piece was aired, with Davis having tricked them into believing he was a friend. Before filming began, Alex Jones asked Davis point blank if the documentary was going to be a hit piece, which Davis denied. After we brought attention to the History Channel's blurb on their website, which clearly characterized the show as a hit piece, Davis panicked and promised to alter the promo, calling it a "misrepresentation," as well as re-edit the entire program to make it more balanced. The promo temporarily disappeared from the website and the broadcast of the show was put back by a week. During the course of this second exchange, Davis again promised Jones that the show was not going to be a hit piece and was very upset that we had discovered he was behind the NBC hit piece on Jackson - seemingly frightened that his cover might be blown and his next victim would be alerted to his scheming tricks. He was terrified and kept repeating that he didn't want to be quoted on anything he said. Just like Popular Mechanics swore that their straw man smear job wouldn't be a hit piece, Davis engaged in journalistic fraud and complete dishonesty by lying directly to Alex Jones' face in claiming the documentary was to be neutral just so he could secure the interview. Just like William Randolph Hearst, the progenitor of the term "yellow journalism," Davis will go down in history as a liar and a fraud. The show itself was deliberately crafted, edited, shot and manipulated to portray the 9/11 truth movement in a completely negative light, while exalting the so-called experts to almost God-like status. - The program makers pulled out all the stops to hire nationally renowned NBC news anchor Lester Holt (pictured) to narrate the show, a trusted voice that was utilized to brutally debunk 9/11 truth representatives. - The debunkers, people like James Meigs whose scientific expertise stretches as far as being the editor of Video Review and Entertainment Weekly, were labeled as experts while real experts like Physicist Professor Steven Jones were stripped of any such description. - The debunkers' interviews were pristinely shot and framed, with beautiful backdrops and highly sympathetic camera angles and filters, whereas the truthers were shot from bizarre positions, their images were deliberately distorted and even the color filter of the shot had been manipulated to make their appearance look tainted, blurred and contorted. This was an intentional ploy and a crude act of manipulation to detract credibility from the truthers and violates all known ethical standards of journalism. continue reading this article at prisonplanet.com  more

Resolved Question: Career choices, life help?

I'm currently in high school, and considering post-secondary choices based on my interests and goals. But lately I've done a lot of second guessing and changing my mind. ..I need some opinions and advice. Fifteen years from now I see myself in a career in an environment where I get to interact with people in a creative manner. Perhaps a business (but more on the aesthetically pleasing side/ not the bland accounting and spreadsheets kind side). My interests include - Media..(but I'm afraid it's just a passing phase) oh and the way people think and expressing my opinions. Careers that are running strong in my mind right now are 1. Media Specialist 2. Psychology 3. Something in Social Sciences. very general. I currently live in Ontario Canada, so my post-secondaries would be like U of T or Western or McMaster, etc. I also have to choose between HS - "Intro to psychology, sociology, anthro(university prep)" OR "Media Studies open" ANY Advice would be appreciated. Thank you I know it's a tough question but a really personalized and thoughtful answer will be rewarded. =] Another note XD, I'm asian and you know how they can be...my father wants me to take life sciences and pursue careers in that...I really don't think I want to do that...but for him, I'm keeping my options open. =P  more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this UCAS application personal statement?

Understanding cinema and television as the unbounded global media that it is has always intrigued me. Even after watching some of my favourite films I immediately purchase them in script form in an effort to understand why these motion pictures can captivate an entire group of spectators in cinemas and homes across the world. Gaining entry to the course would open up a whole new world of knowledge and information , however, the biggest aspect of the course for me would be the chance to work with and learn from experienced individuals who have worked in an industry in which I hope to one day participate. This Degree would undoubtedly give me the confidence and ability to succeed in this industry and also give me the tools needed to write creatively for film and television, either as an individual or as part of a team. Although I have no previous involvement in this subject and have been absent from full time education for over five years, I do exhibit good learning abilities. This can be shown by my HND in Electronics and in the completion of various training courses and ongoing appraisals I currently undergo, which have ensured I have remained in a learning environment which has taken me to the peak of possibilities available in the field in which I work. I have researched the subject I am applying for thoroughly through the prospectus and on-line information from the Faculty of Arts .Having worked in the west end of Glasgow, I am familiar with the area, the University and the bohemian atmosphere that it creates and have a desire to be involved in this lively area that pulses with a multicultural heartbeat. In my current profession, I work alone as part of a specialist team covering the latest products and also covering most of the central belt of Scotland. Working somewhat autonomously requires great self motivation and reliability which is coterminous with the trust in the individual shown by the management. At school I was involved in various extra curricular activities, but the one I am most proud of was the assisted reading program that endeavoured to help younger students with a learning difficulty by improving their reading on a one to one basis. Over the past few years however, the window for these types of activities has been closed mainly due to the fact that my father suffered a near fatal heart attack. Helping him through the first difficult year of recuperation and rehabilitation was the catalyst needed to prompt me to take advantage of company policy and apply for a years career break in which to travel and reassess some personal goals and ambitions. I am fairly active in any free time that I do have and enjoy various sports including playing football twice a week and cycling three times a week. When it gets to winter I enjoy snowboarding with friends over the weekend. Having done some research I am aware that the university has various clubs and associations and, if I am successful in gaining entry to the course, I will be actively looking to join a winter sports club. I love travelling which gives time to pursue my other hobby of photography. I have visited France a few times which has given me the opportunity to brush up on the little French I know, and once drove across the whole country. I have also visited Holland, Belgium, Greece, the Czech Republic and most recently on my career break spent a few months in Australia.  more
