Resolved Question: Cooling And Power Help?

I need tips on how much cooling my computer needs Also do you think my 480 watt power supply is enough? My specs are: -Tripple core 8450 Phenom -1 x DDR2 2gb 800mhz ram -Geforce 9500GT -1 x 250 Gb IDE hard drive -1 x 160 Gb SATA drive -1 x 80 Gb External usb drive -1 x DVD rewritter -1 x Floppy -TV card that supports HDTv -Front bay memorycard reader with USB, Firewire + eSATA At the moment the only cooling inside is: The psu fan Processor heatsink + fan Graphic Card heatsink Ive managed to get away with it so far coz its been winter and one side of my case is basically a mesh that vents it to the max, so as long as my room's cool - the computer's cool. Problem is, summer is soon coming and I dont want all the money and work I put into it to get raped by the heat - so im wondering what the best setup for cooling. I was thinking of installing one case fan at the back and another one in one of the 5.25 inch bays at the front. Another question - how much power will these fans take and is my 480Watt gonna be alble to handle all the crap im throwing at it? When I bought it - it seemed like a good idea coz I wasnt planning on adding anything to the motherboard except for the graphics card - but now I got so many things and wires stickin outta the motherboard it looks like a little mini new york in there. Any help would be appreciated. c'mon people, I need a little more feedback  more

Resolved Question: I have quite an old pc, with only 512mb memory. Ineed to upgrade my video card(agp)but have no idea wat to get?

Like i said i have an agp x4 slot, but have no idea what spec agp card it will take. Am i restricted on the new cards memory? will i need extra power to run it? Cards prices seem to vary so much i dont know where to start. I should also mention that my pc is maxed at 512 memory so i cant upgrade that and that budget is an issue many as the pc itself is worth very little so dont want to be forking out on an expensive new card. Resolved Question: Is it possible to go configure 'wireless technology' on a rig that runs on win 3.1 ?

could it be done ? i.e could a P100 mhz PC with 64MB IDE Ram and a 4MB Hawkeye video card with a 1.2GB Hard disk that has Windows 3.1 as its operating system (option of upgrading to windows 95 ) be configured with a piece of wireless technology such as a USB dongle device or a PCI Wireless adaptor ? or would the volume of data traffic over burden the bus architecture of this legacy machine ? i like challenges and squeezing out the last miniscule bit of strength from a series of hopelessly old computers that I have in my shed lol Infact, I even have a Commodore Amiga 4000 which I also wonder - could go 'online'. hahaha Shane - i want to see wifi technology for my Amstrad CPC 464 * bursts into hysterics *  more

Resolved Question: How can I recover Hard Disk files without 'permissions'?

I have an old pentium 4 with 2 internal HDs. It was running Win XP. The machine will now not boot - not even into safe mode. I have tried reading the 2 HDs on another PC and it recognises one but not the other. I figure it is the one with the Wins XP on which is not recognised and has failed. My files however are on the 2nd HD and I can access the file structure but can't open any of the files. My new PC tells me I do not have 'permission' to open the files. I do have the administrative rights, user name and password for the old PC but it doesn't give me the opportunity to give these details. What can I do to back up this data before reformatting and trying to repair the old machine? I am using a USB to IDE cable to link the old HD to my new PC. Thanks  more

Resolved Question: Press a key to reboot everytime i turn on my pc. BUT THERE IS A CATCH?

ok. 3 times i have looked at my brothers pc. each time he has had problems when i return it back to him. I format the hard drive and reload xp, update and etc. I give it back to him and each time it says the above in the title. The only difference is i use my own mouse and keyboard when fixing it. I give him the unit back, he plughs his mouse and keyboard in and it just keeps asking him to reboot. Any ideas. He has 2 ide internal hard drives ( one for storage) and i can boot off them fine when i use it at my house. Resolved Question: just updated my PC after 4 years. having problems with startup when wireless is enabled?

Hi all, jsut updated my rig after 4 years. All went well and the system was running fine upto the point where Vista did it's final restart after installing (the one before you choose login name etc) and the system just hangs at the green bar on bootup. After some fiddling I removed my PCI Wireless card (aironet 802.11g card) and the system finished installation fine. OK so I went on the hunt for the latest drivers, downloaded and installed them. Restarted the PC with the card in - same problem. This time I went into Safe mode (no networking) and disabled the card, restarted the machine and it booted fine. I then went into Device manager and re-enabled the card - Bingo! Card works fine. Restarted the machine - hangs again. basically I have reinstalled Vista (inc SP1) 4 ties now - twice x64 and twice x86. neither makes a difference. The card worked on my old setup prior to shutdown - Vista 32bit - although the driers had always been flaky at best! Bloody Cisco i have looked for IRQ conflicts as I though itmight be that but the card has changed IRQ several times in these installs from 19 to 16 to 7 and the same problem follows it. I am now faced with ordering a new PCI Wireless card and hoping it is supported in Vista - the one I have gone for is the cheapo Edimax card which by all accounts does a fine job. I just find it so weird that this is suddenly not working on boot - any ideas? I have exhausted all my options. Setup is:- 480W PSU 2 x 2GB OCZ Gold Edition 6400 5-5-5-18 RAM ASUS PK5LM-AM Motherboard (latest BIOS (0511 I think...)) Resolved Question: I have a usb sata/ide adapter which you connect to hdd but they show only as usb devices in device manager?

I have a usb sata/ide lead which you connect to hdd but they show only as usb devices in device manager and in safely remove hardware. the idea is so you can use them as external hdd. my problem is they're not recognised in bios or anywhere else on the computer except in those two places, even then they only show up as a usb device. is there a solution? i have 3 ide and 2 sata hdd scattered around and i would like to recover data from them; the ide's were set to master as the 'manual', (it's a tiny flimsy bit of paper), says we should. does it mean all the drives are faulty?  more

Resolved Question: Pc unable to boot, hard drive failure....?

file system is corrupt, it was on ntfs, windows xp, i bought a ide to usb converter to try and get it to load up on my laptop and run a data recovery program, but it's not recognising and can't see it as an additional drive etc. so i'm trying to sort out the hard drive back on my old pc, set as master, using recovery console, so far i've tried chkdsk /p & chkdsk /r but it always gets stuck at 67% and i left it like it for hours and it definetly wasn't moving anywhere, It says i can't use the bootcfg /rebuild command as it says "error - failed to successfully scan disks for windows installations this error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning. use chkdesk to detect any disk errrors. I really need some help, i'm desperate to get this sorted as it has like 4yrs worth of my data :(  more

Resolved Question: Laptop and USB issues!!?

Ok i have a usb device that keeps being unrecognised or only recognised as an unknown device by my laptop and that i have tried many things to resolve the issues. the device is a USB to LAN adapter...basically so i can use the internet on my laptop! The USB device comes with drivers and once they are installed they dont seem to be able to be un-installed i have:- 1.Attended the device manager and uninstalled the device from there as well as going to NON_PRESENTDEVICES (Value 1) in the device value detection..to show up any un-used drivers. 2. manually looked for instances of the device inside the registry and ran registry cleaners to expell the instance there. No apparent joy 3. looked in the windows SYSTEM 32 file to delete the driver there. ( although the 3 device files are only in .CAT, .SYS and .INF formats) 4. restarted and left the laptop to allow the CMOS to be re-instated correctly. 5.obtained the correct drivers for the device when i do all of this and plug in the device it says " your device is installed and ready to use" and then shows up as an unknown device in the devicemanager and also that there are no drivers present. ??? its so annoying..have i missed something? in addition i am wondering if i need to update my chipset.i have update the BIOS on my laptop as needed, but the last time i did a driver check ...the check threw up that my standard IDE channel controller had bad drivers...im wondering if this was updated that it would help? Unfortunatly i am unable to run a windows update as i cant get on to the internet without the device working to get me on it... any ideas?  more

Resolved Question: Help with cloning laptop hard drive.?

Hi i need some help with cloning my laptop hard drive to a bigger one. I have a 120gb sata (NON IDE) hard drive in my laptop that i wish to clone and put on a new already formated etc 250gb hard drive. I have purchased norton ghost and followed all the instructions on the application, it does its thing and says all is completed no problems. The new hard drive is connected via usb during the conversion using a kit to convert it from sata to usb there isn't in problems with the kit its self that works fine. Now the weird part is when i connect the new drive up to use it and switch the laptop on it looks promising, i get the windows booting up bar and it loads up to the log in screen where i enter my password. Once i enter my password it says preparing your desktop, this takes about 15 odd minutes and then i get a blank screen with just the mouse pointer on it and nothing else loads up. Im guessing some files are missing or im doing something wrong but im unsure and would love some help on this. The laptop is running windows vista. Thanks!! Hi, thanks for the tip. I have used that software and it started the cloning process but then my screen went black and the laptop locked up so i had to swtich it off and swtich it back on again but i guess i could give it another try. Have since given seagate another go and it worked this time round really well! i'm kicking my self for buying norton now lol. Ah well thanks for your answer!! :)  more

Resolved Question: Why am I having problems with Hard disk drive?

I have a Asus formula motherboard, I can only use Sata HDD I have a IDE HDD. I recently bought hardware compatible with IDE to Sata. However, everytime I try and use it the Bios doesn't accept any HDD. Has anyone had any problems like this and what did you do to solve the situation? I've tried installing Windows on the hard disk but there's no hard drive there. I set it up as master I also set it up as slave. I tried using different USB ports. I tried everything possible. 5* for help and advice. Thanks for answering too. Oops sorry mistype. Not USB but Sata port. Sorry I have tried using the IDE HDD but you only have one connection so I tried it as IDE to HD and to DVD-RW. The dVD worked but the HD wouldn't. I then tried it as HD to IDE it worked. But it wouldn't work with DVD. Therefore, I had no choice but to buy a new HD with SATA. However, I'm wanting to install XP on the IDE HDD but it can't acknowledge a HDD put in. I even took out the cables for the other hard disk and see if that runs. It doesn't.  more
