im about 14 years old and for my birthday my mom said i could get my nose pierced, (i tried to get her to let me get my lip pierced but i don't think it'll work out) it sounded pretty great at first but then i heard some stories on how it hurts REALLY bad and is swelled up for a really long time and it gets infected a lot, so my main answer is is it worth all of that? and also i want to know a couple other things- cost? what are the best types of jewelry to put in it? (rings, studs, etc..) how long does it swell after it gets done? how likely are the chances of it getting severely infected and what do i do to stop it? are the precautions to keep it clean unreasonable? (like having to constantly clean it?) and how much does it hurt? and i don't remember getting my ears pierced so i can't compare it. (is there anything else to compare it to?) and lastly is there any other useful things to remember? i know this is sort of a big list but i want to mak sure i'm informed first. (BTW, i'm planning on just my nostril) more

I got my nose pierced for the first time about a month and a half ago (nostril piercing) and haven't had any problems with it. I haven't changed out jewelry, messed with it too much other then cleaning, and I've been cleaning it as the piercer told me to, but just now it's started bleeding a bit. Not much, just a little, but should I be worried? What can I do other than what I'm doing now to prevent it getting infected? Thanks. more

I am a married girl of 24 years old. I am not against the nose piercing but during my childhood no body told me to pierce my nose. I have only my ears pierced at the age of 6 years, which is a tradition in India. I like that every one should pierce his/her nose with a beautiful nose stud or nose ring. Some of my friends have pierced their noses and after seeing them so many times it came to my mind that I should also get pierce my nose, but I was not so bold to tell it to my mom or any of my friends. Therefore till my marriage my nose was not pierced. On the day of my engagement, my husband told me that I should get pierce my nose, as it looks very beautiful, but some how I could not dare for that. In Oct 2003, I was married and I reached to my husband's home. On my honeymoon at Manali, in India, it came to my knowledge that my husband is very much eager to pierce my nose, as he likes it very much. He told me to either get pierced my nose from the market or otherwise he will pierce himself with a needle and put the nose pin or nose ring in the whole. I told him that ok you may pierce my nose but in turn I will also pierce your nose. Are you ready for it? Actually I wanted to pierce his nose from my own hands which I wanted since long, as when ever I see any girl with her pierced nose it looks me very good. And I wanted that I should pierce some one's nose from my own hands. On that day it came to my knowledge that my husband too wanted to pierce his nose so that he could wear a nose pin or nose ring. He had pierced his nose so many times himself before that but the whole was not permanent as he was not able to keep the nose pin continuously for a longer period. Next day we went to market and purchased a beautiful nose ring for my self and a very tiny nose pin of gold for my husband. We also purchased 2 needles for piercing our noses. We came back to hotel. Now we both were ready to pierce nose of each other. First my husband picked the nose ring. The nose ring was a simple wire of gold with motifs and its one end was sharp like a needle. He put a mark on my left nostril and showed me, where he was going to pierce. It was quite a perfect place and I said O.K. I was sitting on a chair with my head on back of chair. He told me not to move and close my eyes. After closing my eyes, he applied some drops of spirit on my nose and on that nose ring too. Now he put the sharp end of that nose ring on my left nostril and pressed it gently in to my nostril. Suddenly I felt a sharp prick in my left nostril as the nose ring was passing through my nostril and within seconds it was out from lower part of my nostril. My eyes were watering. He added the sharp end of nose ring with another rounded end and my nose had been pierced. I went to dressing table to see how it was looking. It was looking very beautiful. Now after 5 minutes, I told to my husband that now it is his turn to get pierced his nose. He said he will face problem in the public. I had purchased very small size nose pin for him, so I explained him that this nose pin is very small in size so it will not be visible so easily to any one, then he agreed. Now I picked one needle and put the nose pin on back part of it. I made a mark on his nose, where I was going to pierce and showed him. I put the sharp end of needle on that mark and pressed it. The needle was moving into his nostril and shortly it was out from lower side of his nostril. Now I pressed the nose pin into this new whole and nose pin was inserted into his nostril. I put the stopper on another part of nose pin and I had pierced the nose of my husband too. I showed him, that how it is looking. He saw the mirror and he was very much satisfied as due to smaller size it was very hardly visible that he is wearing some thing in his nose. I took a promise from him that he will not take it out and will keep it till the whole is permanent. We remain in Manali for 15 days and in this period our wholes were permanent. Now we could change the jewelry as per our choice. When we came back to our home, every one was seeing my nose ring and said that it was looking very beautiful. Now 6 months have passed since that episode, and we both are having holes in our noses. I have 7 nose pins and 4 nose rings which I change as per my choice and my husband's choice too. My husband normally wears that smaller nose pin when ever he goes with me for outing or in night. My suggestion to every girl is that they should get pierce there noses as well as of their boy friends / husbands and enjoy their life with them. Resolved Question: Protocol for repeircing nose?

I got my nose peirced about three months ago and it got a red bump around the jewelry after about three weeks of having it. I felt like I took good care of it because I cleaned it religiously with the solution they gave me. I never did try the sea salt soaks though. But after getting the bump I began using tea tree oil but only a couple days after I started using it, the jewelry fell out while I was brushing my hair. I could not put the jewelry back in because the bump closed over the hole seconds after it fell out. But since then, and its been about two months now, it has heal nicely and my nose seems to be back to the way it was before I got it peirced. I was just wondering if two months is long enough to wait to get your nostril repeirced and what anyone else did to make their nose peircing heal completely because I don't want to make the same mistakes again. I want it to heal this time. ALSO, is repeircing through scar tissue a lot more painful? Thanks so much! more

I was looking on ebay and there is some seller on there selling a a stunning blue ring which supposedly brings visions of ghosts. The story goes like this: While going through my grandmother's old jewelry I found a stunning large blue ring that was just my size. (Women's size 6). It is clearly costume jewelry. I tried it on and admired it. When my grandmother saw me wearing it her face grew pale. She told me that I must never wear it again. I rolled my eyes at her. After she left the room I stole the ring and hid it in my purse. That night a sudden wave of exhaustion hit me and I fell asleep very early with the ring still on my finger. When I awoke a ghostly figure stood above me. It was a woman with long blond hair and hollow eyes. She was translucent and shivering. Water dripped from her ghostly body as she hovered inches above the floor. The smell of ocean water filled my nostrils. I stared at her my mouth agape. "GIVE ME BACK MY RING," She yelled at me. I immediately awoke. I was relieved that it was only a dream. That's when I noticed the puddle on the floor. The next day I went back to my grandmother's. I asked her about the ring. "It was stolen," My grandmother told me. When she was a young woman, my grandmother fell in love with a very bad man. He showered her with gifts. Only later did she find out that all of the gifts were stolen. Over the years my grandmother has given every gift away, except the blue ring. There is something powerful about this ring. I am too afraid to continue on with this journey. I want to find someone who can solve the mystery of the woman with the hollow eyes. I sold this on Ebay a week ago. The ring was returned along with this note: "I'm sorry but I cannot hold on to this ring. After wearing the ring this weird smell filled my house and it got really cold. I heard muffled whispering. I have the right side of my nose pierced and i use the nose screws, i noticed sometimes they are bent to the right and sometimes they are bent to the left. Does it matter? Are they bent depending on what side of the nostril you have pierced? The one i bought on ebay is bent the opposite direction as the one i bought from my piercer and it has the tendency to poke out of my nose, like it doesn't fit right. more

Voting Question: What kind of nose ring can I wear that won't fall out in my sleep?

I had both nostrils pierced recently. They were pierced with L-shaped nose rings, which worked fine, and they were both healing really well until recently. The left side fell out while I was sleeping, I lost the ring, repierced, and wore a different ring. I got over it quick until it happened AGAIN last night, and I tried to fit another ring in it, and it just wasn't going through because the bend in the L ring wouldn't pass through. The hole is still there though, and I put an earring in temporarily until I can get another kind of ring. I really need to put the proper jewelry in soon, which will probably be in a few hours. Should I go for nose screws or nose bones? Which would be less likely to fall out while sleeping and less annoying to take out? Oh, I also have a septum piercing, and wear a seamless ring in it. Would a screw or bone irritate it or get in the way of it? The L-shaped ones didn't, but then again, they were rather short. more

Voting Question: Nostril screw vs. nostril bone, anodized titanium, when can I change?

Hi there, I got my nostril pierced back in December at a random tourist trap in Cocoa Beach. (The piercing was planned, the location was not). The piercer was nice but didn't offer me any extensive aftercare once the piercing was done and he didn't seem interested in answering my questions. So, I have a few q's. 1) I'm able to easily slip my nostril screw nearly all the way out and back in with no pain or discomfort. In fact, I've accidentally removed it during cleaning and reinserted it within about a minute. No lymph or crusting is present anymore, there's no swelling, no bleeding. Does this mean I can go ahead and change it out? Or should I wait 6 months like I've heard? 2) I currently have a nostril screw. What if I wanted to switch to a bone? Would pushing the tip of the bone through damage the hole? (They look like they have a little ball at the end that is wider than the piercing itself). I've found several pieces of jewlery that I like but they are bones and not screws. 3) I have a nickel allergy so I was pierced with 14k gold. I know that I am not allergic to gold, or white gold. I imagine that I am also not allergic to titanium, considering I've got titanium rods and screws implanted in my back due to a spinal fusion! ;) So I was wondering what anodized titanium is, and if it is nickel free? I'm also a bit irritated because I have a 20g piercing but was pierced with an 18g needle. I imagine I have to stick with 20g jewelry because the hole has healed around it at that size, right? Resolved Question: Keloid or Hypertrophic scar in my nostril piercing? How should I treat?

Backstory: I had my nose pierced while out of state on June 21st and had no complications for 5 weeks. On the 5th week, the jewel fell out of the ring so I went to my normal piercer for a replacement. He told me the piercer used jewelry that was too small and the actual hole had started to shrink a little. He said he'd have to stretch it slightly to fit the normal 18g sized ring in and that it should be no problem. About a week after that I noticed a small bump forming. I was soaking my piercing in a sea salt solution once-twice daily and cleaning the site with antimicrobial soap and water twice daily. It quit growing for awhile but then 4 or so days ago it grew to about twice the size. It has again quit growing. I've tried applying Vitamin E oil (what my piercer recommended) over the past 3 or so days as well as the aspirin/water paste. The bump does not appear to be getting any smaller, but does seem to be getting a little softer? Also, today I scratched the bump a little too hard and it started to bleed. 1) Do you think this sounds like a keloid or a hypertrophic scar? 2) What types of OTC treatments would you recommend? 3) Is there anything I can do to prevent this bump from growing any larger? (It is currently just big enough to hide my nose ring from view if you look at me from the front.) Thank you in advance. :) more

Resolved Question: Does anyone have some advice for a difficult nose piercing?

I got my right nostril pierced two and a half months ago. I had a small lump next to it for a while that oozed puss. It went away after I started putting hot compresses on it and lanced it with a sterile needle. Everything was cool after that. Until now. I decided that it was healed well enough, since it gave me no pain and I could remove and replace the screw-style stud with ease, so I bought a new stud that I felt would sit flatter. It did. It was a nose bone (the kind with a bulb at the end). It got stuck. It caused me great pain trying to get it out, but I did and replaced the original jewelry. At this point, I noticed that the area around the piercing on the inside of my nostril was very tender and slightly swollen. I think it might have some puss in it, but I'm not sure. I'm planning on treating it with warm salt water and diluted tea tree oil. That is, until I can go in to see my piercer and/or doctor. Any advice? Do you think the path I'm going on is a good idea, or is there something more intelligent I could be doing? Thank you so much in advance for your answers, you are all very kind to help. more

Voting Question: What should my next piercing be..

I had my ears pierced when I was a baby. I'm 15 now and want to get a piercing somewhere on my face(besides my ears). Debating between tongue, nostrils, and lip. If I get it on the lip, which area would look best/hurt least? Out of those face areas which hurts least? And are the prices all generally the same? Does it include the actual jewelry like with ear piercings? Also, with school.. If body jewelry is not allowed, and you have it on while it's healing, can they still make you take it off? What about with tongue piercings, because I know the hole will close off rather quickly. A spiral notebook... nice. I don't want to get all of these piercings, I want to get one. The one that hurts the least. Why don't you go bother the people who are giving themselves cancer by putting 20 lbs of makeup on their face/day. more

I got my nostril pierced on May 22nd and had the piercer use a nose screw as my first jewelry. It's been exactly 9 weeks, and I bought a few other pieces of jewelry (also nose screws) that I love. Is it okay to change the jewelry now? And if it is okay... how the HECK do I get this thing out of my nose? How do I get the other one in? I'm so used to having circular barbells or labret studs in the rest of my piercings, so I've got no clue as to how to get this one in/out :-P more

I recently got my nose pierced with one of those screw hook looking jewelry, I awoke one morning, and it seemed to me that I had lost my nose piercing, it was not in my nose, or so I thought...I put an earing through to keep the hole from closing but the bar was too small, or so I thought because it didn't reach to the inside of my nose, so today i went out and bought a new nose piercing, the same screw/hook thing, as I am trying to screw it in, I find it difficult to push through I hold my nostril up to have a look, and lo and behold, a piece of my first piercing is actually IN my nostril, unfortunately it wasn't all the way out, so when I tried to pull it out, it got pushed back in, without the stud, laying flat inside my nostril so I cant push it back out the hole.you can not see the jewelry on either side of the hole, it is just IN my nose I really dont want to have to go to a doctor and have them slice my nose open to get it out, any ideas? Has anyone had this happen to you? more

Resolved Question: Messed up nose piercing?

I got my nose pierced about 6 weeks ago. I wanted to try one of the dogbone or screw type studs. I tried the dog bone but to put it in correctly puts the piercing through my nose! In other words, it's to short, I've looked for longer ones but they are usually the same general length (7mm). I am still wearing the original stud which has a long wire that sticks out of my nostril, which I do not like. I also tried one of the clear retainers which was also to short. Could I just clip the wire? Or was it pierced incorrectly? Is there a way to find longer nose jewelry? Thanks for any advice :) more

okay well my septum piercing is completely healed (im not sure how long but its been at least 9 weeks) but theres still a problem with the side on my right nostril. the left is 100% healed and doing amazing, but the right is STILL swollen a little right around the hole, its also painful putting jewelry in. (i silde it in the left and make it go out the right but its hard to get through the right side and hurts) i dont change jewelry often and i havent changed it in weeks (besides last night to see how it was doing) i always wear my black niobium retainer. i use H2Ocean also. the right side has been this way since it was pierced, and its not an infection, its like a little swelling all around the hole. what do i do?? and i cant go talk to a piercer like i wish i could =/ i dont have that but i use other cleansers and sea salt soaks sometimes and its not the jewelry because im fine with any kind, and if it was it wouldnt only be irritating one side oh and i never change it usually i dont even flip it down! i just wanted to see if it had gotten better last night so i took it out to clean it better, clean the jewelry well, and see if its still like that its pierced in the sweet spot, not the cartilage more

Resolved Question: Can you use ear lobe tapers to stretch a nostril piercing?

I got my nostril pierced 2 years ago and 6 months after the piercing i changed the jewelry to a smaller gauge. I now realize that most of the nose jewelry is 18g or bigger and i think right now mine is a 20g, possibly smaller because the post is very thin. Just wondering if I should gradually stretch it with a 18g taper, like you would for an ear lobe piercing? Anyone who's done it? Thanks! more

I had my nostril pierced 10 days ago. I love it! BUT even if I turn it so it's not visible (pointing up on the inside) it's uncomfortable and it falls right away so it's hanging down again. The other day i was sitting at home watching tv, and I heard some rustling in the bushes in front of my house. I went outside to check it out, and there was Jesus, holes and all. I invited him to come inside, but he was sobbing, saying something about needing cocaine. I said I couldn't help him, cuz I think he was trying to set me up. Don't tell me no. I've known I wanted a nose piercing since I was at least 8. I've tried to persuade my mom, and my dad, but of course, they said no. They hate the idea of non-lobe piercings/modifications, even though I have my right cartilage pierced. I can't wait until I'm 18 to get it, since that is about 6 years away, so I want to do it myself. I know I'm stupid, blah, blah blah. My piercer (the one that did my lobes and my cartilage) knows that I want a nostril piercing, but since I am underage, she most likely won't sell me a proper nose screw. My daughter goes to a boarding school that does not allow body piercing. They want the girls to wear acrylic "plugs" instead of their regular jewelry. I got my nose pierced about... a week? ago. The jewelry is kinda L shaped. It constantly comes out at night, and I can't bring myself to put it back in because it hurts like a b*tch. So, I'm stuck driving back to my piercer to get it back in because everyone else just kinda shoves it in which is worse. Every time it falls out, I stick in an earring until I find it/get it back in. I know messing around with the jewelry is a terrble idea before it's healed, but this waking up to no jewelry in my nose to shove in an earring that I'm worried will infect it is getting old, but I'm reallly hoping there's something that won't come out like this, or even a way to just keep it in.
