Open Question: How should i upgrade to 2 screens?

Hello Guys I decided that I want to upgrade my system but I don’t exactly know what should I upgrade in it. Here are my system spec now: Cpu: Intel quad core Q6600 Motherboard: ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 Memory(RAM) : Kingston ddr2 667mhz 2GB (2x1gb ) Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 512MB Samsung 320Gb HDD Hannspree 19inch screen I want to upgrade my Ram to at least 4GB 800Mhz DDR2 ram but I don’t know if I should spend more on it and buy ddr3 ram. Also if I want to upgrade my ram I need a new motherboard because my current one only can take up to 2 gb of ram. I also want to buy an other screen so I can have dual screen system. I was thinking about a 22 inch Samsung t220hd. Then later on I would buy an other one and change my current screen to that so I will have 2 22inch screens. But I’m not sure if my current graphics card would take 2 22 inch screens in hd. Plus it only has one dvi connector and one vga which is ok until I buy my second 22 inch screen because then I want to hook them both up to dvi ports because I heard that they are better. I’m not really a big gamer and I’m not planning on using my computer to play many games. I just want my computer to take the two 22 inch screens in full resolution with no problem when I do lighter tasks. So basically my questions are should I go with the cheaper ddr2 memory or go for the faster but more expensive ddr3? What kind of motherboard should I buy and what kind of graphix card should I upgrade to? Sorry if I’m asking too much but this is going to be my first multy screen system and I want it to run with no problem.  more

Open Question: Best 478 Intel Upgrade Option?

Hello, I currently have a socket 478 motherboard with Pentium 4 2.0 GHZ. I am now considering upgrading to a Celeron 2.66 GHZ. I have reade that Celeron has less cache however is still being made in new retail computers as Pentium 4 had finished in 11/2008. I mainly use my computer for work and games such as GTA San Andreas and NFS Carbon. Would changing to Celeron from this P4 Processor be a good option.  more

Open Question: My computer monitor shows nothing but weird lines/colored shapes at random parts of the screen!!!?

I had just formatted (long story), and reset up my computer. the day after that, I was playing a game (Disciples 2 gold, if it matters), n suddenly, the game SEEMED to crash (maybe, just monitor prob?). The screen flashed to black, then desktop, to then lines going down and green squares in the corner (really glitchy looking). restarted n same or simmilaar things were shown, a few times it showed the two start screens (one showing all drives, and one with diff details in box-shows up at start up on all coms)- but then it either froze or repeated the same words at different parts of the screen. Tried a different (working) monitor, n same problem. My Graphics card is built into motherboard, and I already checked ALL cables, components, connections, ect.. PLEASE HELP, I NEED TO USE MY COM. FOR MY IPOD!!!!!(huge music lover) IDK if its a graphics card problem or not. I have plenty of power (com worked fine till I screwed something up w/ the OS-hence the reason I formated it) nothing wrok internally (at least that you could see). My Stepdad thinks its a video card problem, but I wanted a second oppinion before i bought one. I cant do ANYTHING, cause I CANT SEE anything.  more

Open Question: Dell Optiplex 755 Small Form Factor Blue Screen Error?

Here is the problem. I bought this computer from my brother without the case and installed everything in a dell optiplex 745 small form factor case. I ran across a problem with the front iso panel which includes the power button. The problem was the ribbon cable on this 755 pc that attaches from the motherboard to the front iso panel were slightly different by 2 pins. so I replaced the front iso panel with the 755 front panel so the cable would now attach. come to find out there is another little circuit board which is attached to the front case fan housing and a small 5/6 wire ribbon cable runs from the front iso panel to this self standing circuit bord on the front case fan housing. When I unplug this small ribbon cable that runs from the front iso panel to this little circuit board the pc boots up fine but with no operating system because I recently formatted the hard drive to install a new copy of windows. NOW! the blue screen of death appears every time I try to load windows. it will go threw the whole process of installing necessary files at the begening and then it usually restarts and goes threw the steps again only this time with a picture showing whats being installed with the little circles on the left showing windows being installed. Only it never gets past the first part of instillation as if the pc wont restart it self for some reason....? Note I can not turn the pc off by using the front power button "its brand new" what are the chances that this little circuit board on the front case fan housing could be the problem...? it plugs up like it should but when pluging in the power cable the power light only flashes orange 3 times with a pause then repets it self. I know this is a long message but I have spent $350 dollars trying to get this going and still cant get it :( Please help me Desperate  more

Open Question: Why doesnt my computer turn on?

I have VPR Matrix FT 2100 PE http://www.vprmatrix.com/products_desktop_FT2100.asp One day it stopped turning on. There was no power outage and it was on a surge strip. I've tried connecting it to every outlet in the house with and wihtout the surge protect and turned the switch in the back where the fan is on and off and I used a can on pressurized air to clean out the fans and all the dust. One thing to note is that when I plug the computer into an outlet and turn it on nothing happens but I opened up the PC while it was connected to the outlet and noticed there is a green light that turn on and stays solid green on the motherboard. SO WHAT CAN BE THE PROBLEM!?!?!?  more

Open Question: I need to update my memory, Video card and Hard drive, need some help!?

I need a AGP video card with dual monitor capabilities. There are so many choices and rules...my main goal for my video card is to play new games (currently my card is so old that it won't play anything new.). Games such as Spore, The Movies, Black & White. I need dual monitors for film editing and photo editing. Next, I need memory. How do I find out what kind to get? My computer is approximately 4 yrs old. Finally, I got a SATA internal hard drive from someone. It is 500 GB. I want to use it, but my computer is IDE. I know I can get convertors for the motherboard, but I think i want it as an external HD. I guess I would just like some suggestions. My main reason for wanting it to be external is because I have a lot of videos, music and photos that I do not regularly need but are very important (I make films). They take up approximately 150GB of my current internal HD. So what do you think I should do with this new 500GB hd? Thanks!  more

Open Question: Budget gaming PC help?

Hi I am building a gaming PC under $900 aus I know little about the technical side to computers and over the last few days I have been doing research and this is what I came up with (without Optical Drive and Hard Drive): INTEL CORE2 DUO E7600 3.06GHZ (CPU) GIGABYTE GTS250 1GB (GPU) GIGABYTE GA-EP41-UD3L (Motherboard) GIGABYTE 550W (PSU) CORSAIR TWIN2X 2048MB 240-PIN DDR2 (RAM) THERMALTAKE WING BLACK STEEL CASE (Case) Cost: $880 aus This is the best I can come up with, with my knowledge of gaming computers ^^. If anyone can tell me where I can make changes I would really appreciate it. For example I hear some graphics cards work better on different motherboards? Is my motherboard a good option for my graphics card and would a ATI Radeon HD 4850 be better? I know that different games work better with different graphics cards, however I just want my computer to be well rounded. The website I used to make this was auspcmarket.com.au and if anyone can tell me a better australian website to buy from I would also appreciate this to ^^.  more

Resolved Question: My computer spontaneously/randomly reboots and sometimes windows xp doesn't get past the opening logo! Help!?

I bought my desktop computer a few years ago and a friend who works during the day on computers set it up for me and it was working fine. Since then I have left it on for many days and nights and in the last year i noticed it would occasionally have rebooted itself. Recently, I moved out of home and re-formatted the whole computer and re-installed Windows inc. service pack 3, a version I have used on other computes without problems. Even after re-installing windows I have been getting occasional reboots. At any time I might be doing something, sometimes i can use my computer for hours, and other times it reboots and then won't even get past the windows logo on startup. There is a tiny little fan on the motherboard that is not working but i didn't think that would cause such a major problem. I will let you know that the side of the computer case is not on properly, it is open to the air of the room, but most of the time my room is cold. not fully heated. Any ideas? Specs 2GIG Geil Ram K8N Diamond Motherboard AMD 64 bit CPU Core Duo Thanks for the feedback guys. Actually its not the fan on top the CPU, that one is working. It is another fan on the motherboard. http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/790-diamond.jpg It's the fan on the bottom right below the RAM slots with the MSI sticker. All other fans are working. In fact, I have a cooler master case with a fan at the front and a fan at the back. Do you still think it is an over heating problem?  more

Open Question: My computer is behaving very strangley!?

The computer is an hp pavillion w/ vista. It is not more than 2 years old. The computer used to run just fine, and never give any problems. Recently it has been shutting down when I am in the middle of using it. The computer does this more when I have more things open. A speaker fell on it quite a while ago, and could have knocked a part loose, but I am not sure if it is the motherboard, or if it is overheating, or if it is a virus. The strange thing is that one day, I turned it on after it shut off by itself and I entered the safe mode with networking, rather than the regular setting, and although it looks a bit like the 90's windows, it is running quite smoothly. Any ideas? P.S. I have McAfee virus protection and it said there is no viruses, although the computer shuts down whenever a scan starts now so who knows.  more

Open Question: Installing Drivers after Reinstallation of Vista?

I apologize for the length - just trying to be thorough. Please help if you can. Yesterday I needed to reinstall my Vista OS and went through the steps - erasing my drive via booting from the Vista Installation disk and installing Vista once again then Windows greeted me and I punched in all the necessary info etc... and got to the desktop. First things first I put in my ASUS motherboard disk (computer specs listed below) and got to the menu screen where I was to download my drivers - there was a driver for my Ethernet and for my Audio Driver [ Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet Driver & Realtek Audio Driver respectively ] and I installed those without any issues. However, I decided to look in my manual that came with my motherboard and realized that three items did not make it on the menu screen, AMD Chipset Program Driver, ATI RAID/AHCI Controller Driver and AMD CoolN'Quiet Driver. These seems like vital components that need to be loaded. I went and explored the contents on the ASUS disk and tried installing manually but it would not allow me - i tried downloading the items off the ASUS website via drivers page, no luck. If anyone can give me a way to install these drivers or find out if Vista automatically installed default drivers I would greatly appreciate it. -- AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Processor -- Motherboard: Asus M3A Socket AM2+/ AMD 770/ DDR2-1066/ RAID/ A&GbE/ATX Motherboard -- Memory: SUPER TALENT 8GB DDR2 800MHZ PC-6400 (4 X 2GB) -- Video Card: nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB DDR3 HDCP Video Card -- OS: Windows Vista Ultimate x64 p.s. Resolved Question: Why has my computer been crashing?

I have an AMD Athlon 64 dual-core processor 2.21ghz, a nvidia 9800GT with 1GB ddr3, 1.5gbs of ram, and a reliable asus motherboard. I don't have anything overclocked right now. My computer has crashed 5 times in the last week, and each time resulted from full-screening an in-browser streaming video via Firefox. The video runs for about 1-10 seconds and then bam, everything is frozen including the mouse cursor. It's not the video card or monitor as I've used Alt+F4 repeatedly and played around with the keyboard and didn't get any response from my computer. (It's a loud machine and any process/program creates sound). On a similar and related note: I've decided to install the Windows 7 Beta on an extra hard-drive I just set up, and during the install my computer freezes in the same way at various random points. I can do anything else on my computer without it freezing: install anything/everything else, play Prototype on nearly max settings for 5 hours, etc. I think it might be a hardware problem, but I've done everything including cleaning out my motherboard/hardware with keyboard cleaner - it's completely dust-free now. And my cooling fans seem to be working alright. I don't know how to approach this problem. Any input would be appreciated, thanks. Also running Windows XP.  more

Open Question: need help getting my computer to start up?

I just got my motherboard replaced because the PS2 ports were bad and now my computer freezes on the boot up screen. It is the same motherboard as I had be for. It's a MSI P35 NEO-F. The computer will freeze on a screen with a picture of a bear claw cutting through a diamond plate background with the msi logo in the top right corner and intel logo on the bottom right corner of the screen. On the very bottom of the screen it says to press tab to switch to POST or DEL to go to BIOS but nothing works. If I turn my computer on and off enough i get a screen that says the following- AMIBIOS (C) 2006 American Megatrends, Inc. Done. Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, (red) and the system is restored to the defaults setting, (in red) Press any key except "DEL" to enter SETUP....... (in red) When I press a key i get this- Keep current BIOS setting? (Y/N) Press [Y] to continue or press [N] to load some item default setting. (i now press y or n and some more stuff pops up under the question to keep bios, i get the same thing weather i press y or n) 4096MB OK USB Legacy support disabled in the Setup ! From here it is frozen and doesn't do anything. I am using an GeForce 9800 video card and have 4 mb of RAM. I unplugged everything from the motherboard but the video card and get the same results. I don't know anything about overclocking but i dont think anything on my computer is overclocked. Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong? Open Question: What is a good PC case for my rig?

I have built my first custom gaming PC and everything has gone perfectly, apart from, surprisingly, the case. I never really considered how important a case was and did the least amount of research into it. It turns out even though it fits my Rampage Extreme II motherboard, it does so only just and blocks all the SATA ports once in place. This is very annoying as I now have to un screw everything to plug or unplug SATA ports. Can anyone suggest a very roomy case to fit my rig in. A very important factor would also be water cooling, it must be able to fit in all the necessary water cooling tubes as well as I will soon be installing it to get going with overclocking. But I won't start overclocking until I have had a little experience on a old PC. Please list as many cases you can think of or you have seen with similar set ups and I will check them all out. I will also post back with the one I finally choose. Hope someone can help. Oh also just a side question. What is the proper term for the computer "case"? Is it chassis? Or can both be used. I know screen isn't the proper term for the monitor but still pretty nooby with the terminology.  more

Open Question: Is my Graphics Card upgradeable?

I have a nvidia geforce 6150 SE graphics card, but I'm not sure if I can upgrade that because it seems to be integrated into the PC's motherboard (not a card). Having no knowledge of such things, I'm not sure if my computer has the ability to have its graphics card upgraded or not. It is an HP Media Center if that helps. If so, what kinds of graphics cards would be the best to use? Thanks  more

Open Question: Major Computer Problem?

First off, I apologize for the length of this but I wanted to be thorough. A few weeks ago, I turned my computer off for the weekend. When I returned home, I turned the computer on and it ran for a few minutes and then it turned off. I initially was not concerned because this had happened in the past but nothing else came of it. This time however, when I went to turn the computer back on, it turned on for a second and turned right back off. It would do this if I kept trying to turn it on. If I let it set for awhile, it would boot long enough to get to the desktop, and then do the same thing. I decided to test different components. I swapped out the PSU, both video cards (they are 8800GTs that were in SLI), two sticks of RAM, the hard drive, and the CPU. All components that I used to test are working and the only reason I wasn't using them in the first place was because I upgraded the components but kept the old ones. The only thing I didn't swap out was the motherboard because I don't have a second one. I tried flashing the BIOS and it finished but before I could properly shutdown the computer it turned off again. If it booted long enough, I would get a black screen saying "Error loading operating system". I already researched how to fix this though. I switched the SLI_CON tab from dual video card to single video card, and now I am not getting any video at all. The LED on the front of the computer case is also red. My specs are listed below. CPU: Intel E8400 3.0GHz GPU: PNY 8800GT x2 RAM: OCZ PC6400 2GB total (2x1GB) HDD: Seagate 7200.1 1TB PSU: Ultra 750w modular MOBO: Asus P5N-E SLI If any more information is needed, I am more than willing to add it. Thanks! Oh, I forgot to mention that at the POST screen it was showing 512MB of RAM, even though I have 2GB installed.  more

Open Question: Computer screen problems, video distortion, corruption, etc.?

Well, i have been running an nVidia geforce 9600 gt low power edition by EVGA, (doesnt require 6-pin adapter), for a month now, and my power supply was only 300 watts, so i decided to just upgrade to a corsair 650w because i am going to build a new computer soon and i will use the corsair. the power supply came and i installed it, and i made sure every single cable was plugged in to what it needed to be plugged into. i turn on the computer and the screen either doesnt recognize the computer, or it is just completely distorted. i can make out some of the screens like the hp loadscreen and the windows xp load screen, but it is very corrupted, and i cant make out very much. next, i take out the video card and run my computer off of the onboard graphics, and it runs just fine. this card has been running fine for a month, and all the sudden this happens. i know for a fact the problem isnt with the power supply, the motherboard, or the screen, so the only thing i can pin this problem on is the graphics card. i just want to know if i friend my card or not, but i did submit an RMA to evga anyways. thanks for your time  more

Open Question: Hard Drive Error!! Please help!!?

I have only used this hard drive two times. I have tons of pictures on it and there are no other backups seeing as my laptop crashed due to a faulty motherboard. It worked fine on my laptop which ran Vista, I verified that everything was on the hard drive using my moms laptop running XP. When I went to put more on my hard drive (using my mom's XP laptop), I plugged it in without turning the drive on and it automatically restarts the laptop, so I tried another USB port and it completely shut off the laptop. The hard drive is Hitachi and it is powered/wall plug. When I have tried plugging it into 2 other computers, one a laptop, the other a desktop (both run XP), it says the power exceeds the hub or something to that effect, it is the common error people get with the external hard drives. How do I fix this or at least get my data off? I just don't want to lose all the pictures I have. Thanks for your help!  more

Resolved Question: Why does my VRAM decrease when I add more RAM?

My motherboard has six RAM slots on it - 3 primary (white) and 3 secondary (blue). It originally had 3 GB of RAM installed on it (three 1 GB sticks in the white slots). When I had this RAM in my PC, I had 2285 MB of dedicated VRAM. I upgraded my RAM to 12 GB (six 2 GB sticks). This occupied all six RAM slots, obviously. When I turned my computer on, I only had 494 MB of VRAM. I removed the three secondary RAM sticks, leaving my with three 2 GB sticks in the white slots. This increased my VRAM to 3819 MB. I thought it might be a problem with the RAM sticks I was using, so I tried using the three 2 GB sticks in the white slots, and the original three 1 GB sticks in the blue slots. But the same problem occurred, and I'm down to 494 MB of VRAM again. Here are my system's specs: - Motherboard: Intel X58 - Processor: Intel Core i7-920 @ 2.66 GHz (x4) - Video cards: two NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 cards (1 GB VRAM each) - Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (64-bit) The problem is either happening when I go over 6 GB of RAM, or when I have any RAM in the secondary RAM slots. Is there something I have to set up for my PC to use those secondary slots? It is detecting all 12 GB of the RAM, it's just my VRAM that's decreased. Yes, I'm sure I didn't read the VRAM wrong. I can play Crysis on maxed-out settings when I have only 6 GB of RAM, but I have to turn the settings down when I increase to 9 GB or 12 GB of RAM. Both my video cards are supposed to have 1 GB of VRAM on their own, so it's not even detecting that, which is very odd. I do have the newest driver for my video cards, too. I have a 700W power supply. That should be enough because I just added another hard drive to my PC, and it's working fine. This problem started happening way before I got that hard drive, though, so I don't think it can be a power problem. I just tried 7 GB of RAM (three 1 GB sticks + 1 GB stick), and my VRAM went down to 235 MB. Bubblegum, Why would they have those blue slots if they don't work? I was going to get three 4 GB sticks of RAM, but I can't find a place that sells 4 GB sticks of RAM.  more

Open Question: I'm building a computer, will it be able to go on the internet?

I'm in the process of buying parts to build a computer, and this may be a dumb question, but I got to thinking, what do I plug my internet cable into? I am totally green on SATA but have installed a few IDE drives. Thanks for your help.. Resolved Question: No sound in front speakers of X-540?

Okay, I've looked around online and Yahoo! Answers but haven't found a good solution to this problem. My motherboard (GA-MA790GP-DS4H) is using a integrated sound card, I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and Realtek Audio Manager with updated drivers. I would also like to note that the hardware is working fine since I plugged these speakers into a different computer and they all worked perfectly right away. Speakers are Logitech X-540.  more

Open Question: My CPU speaker beeps every second, but only in the afternoon?

Hey there, guys. I'm having some problems with my computer's built in speaker (the one that beeps at boot). This speaker has recently begun to beep about once every second, for no obviously apparent reason. This only occurs during the afternoon, strangely enough, and seems to be aggravated by what may be hard drive and/or processor access. (this was observed when my Trend Micro updates started a batch of beeps, and then ended them when I cancelled the update.) And even worse, today, the external speakers (ones for music and stuff) have begun to click and pop along with the CPU speaker, which is really getting on my nerves. Yet very weirdly, the external ones don't beep if I mute them from Volume Control. Can anyone come up with any solutions for me? I'd really appreciate them. P.S., I'm using: - Windows XP SP2 - Intel Duo Core - GA-8IPE1000 Series Motherboard - 2 sticks of RAM at 1 GB each. - I'm in tip top shape with my hard drive defrag and stuff. - I'm not using any system monitoring software other than my motherboard's built-in alarm for fans and temperature. Also, the beeping IS NOT at boot.  more

Resolved Question: How can I solve this problem of who's fault that my computer broke down?

Ok, so I took my computer which is a HP Pavilion to some computer tech guys to fix my usb port because their was no connection or power. The guys said it has something to do with my motherboard which a fuse or something for the usb is not working because of connecting psp, ipod, and etc. that charges off usb or something. Well they changed my internal hard drive and ram to put in new ones, but i told them not to so they took it back out. I took my tower back home and when I turned it on the log in screen was ok but when I got to the desk top it seemed like it has gotten rebooted. It shows that my stuff are still there, but for some reason the computer tech said its in a locked folder which I never seen before appeared in my computer and they wanted charge me for something that they did wrong. They are saying that my space in hard drive was to low, but I know it was fast because I used it before giving it to them. Ok, so my question is what should I do report them or something? If possible how easy is it for me to open the lock folder or regain my stuffs? Sorry it's a long story but THANK YOU IF YOU CAN HELP!=)  more
